The Truth - The Unconditional Love of God

Jesus said in John 17:17 (NKJV) that the Word of God is truth. From John 1:1 (Amplified Bible), we see that Jesus is the Word. Finally, John 3:16 and Romans 5:8 tell us that God sent His beloved Son as Jesus Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. Jesus Christ and Him crucified is the definitive show and proof of God’s love for us. Therefore, the truth is that God loves us unconditionally.

When we were infants, we wailed when hunger struck and our parent (s) fed us. As we felt the discomfort of discharge from the body, we cried and our parent (s) washed and cleaned us up. They even bathed us when we did not even know that we needed it. Did we do anything then to earn their care, concern, and love? How to? It was simply because they love us. As it is with the example, so it is with how God loves us. Apart from God’s love, we deserve nothing good. As a matter of truth, we are like infants; helpless and powerless to do anything to earn God’s love.

Imagine an earthly parent expecting a hungry infant to earn his milk by some deed (s). For instance, stop crying and then I’ll feed you. In exegetical terms, God blesses you only when you stop sinning. It is a ludicrous and even sickening thought. Yet, this is how we perceive God.

The hungry infant cries because of hunger. A sinner sins because he is a sinner (void of God’s love). Feed the hungry infant and he will stop crying. Feed the sinner with God’s love and he will stop sinning.

Good and evil. Deserving and undeserving. Qualified and disqualified.

“How can I justify myself for God’s unconditional love?”

This question is oxymoronic. If we need to justify for God’s love, it would not be unconditional. In Biblical language,

“And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace.  But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work.”

-       Romans 11:6 (NKJV)

Grace is defined as the unearned, unmerited, and undeserved favor of God. To look to self for justifications of God’s love is to know or perceive God through the physical senses. This erroneous perception replaces the simplicity of God’s unconditional love. Instead of just simply receiving God’s unconditional love, we needlessly place a demand on ourselves to qualify for His love (2 Corinthians 11:3, NKJV).
