The Marriage Metaphor - See Jesus in the Bible

Preface

It is said that the Old Testament (Old) is the New Testament (NEW) concealed and the New is the Old revealed.

The main character hidden in the Old and revealed in the New is none other than our Lord Jesus Christ.  This truth was revealed by Jesus Himself in passages such as Luke 24:27 and John 5:39.

In this booklet, we will look at the mystery of the church as hidden in the very beginning of the Holy Bible.

All scriptures are quoted from the Amplified Bible unless otherwise stated.

The New Reveals the Old
In Genesis 2:18, God said it was not good or beneficial for the man to be alone.  Jesus said in John 14:18 that He would not leave us as orphans.

In Genesis 2:18, God said He would make man a helper.  Jesus said in John 14:26 that God would send the Helper, the blessed Holy Spirit.

The helper of Genesis 2:18 alluded to the blessed Holy Spirit.

The helper in Genesis was taken out of man - Genesis 2:21-23

The Helper of the New Covenant indwells (poured into) man - Joel 2:28, Acts 2:14-36.

The man shall be joined to the helper and they shall become one flesh – Genesis 2:24; Ephesians 5:31-32.

Believers (church) are in perfect union with Christ; we are in Christ as one body – 1 Corinthians 15:31; Galatians 3:27.

The Marriage Metaphor
The union of man and woman in marriage is a mystery.  It the truth about Christ and the church. The divine reality hidden in the metaphor of marriage is that God ordained a permanent union between His Son and the church. Human marriage is the earthly image of this divine plan. It is the will of God for Christ and the church to become one body- Galatians 3:28; 1 Corinthians 12:13.

This is reflected in His will for marriage to reflect this pattern; the husband and wife shall become one flesh just as believers are in perfect union with Christ -Genesis 2:24; Ephesians 5:31-32; 1 Corinthians 15:31; Galatians 3:27.
